This was a bit of an experiment. I liked the swivel chair in the corner of my RV and it was in great condition. The fabric color was just not my flavor.
I did some research on dying fabric and then started asking google if I could paint fabric. Eventually I stumbled across some information on Simply Spray Upholstery Fabric Paint. I decided to give it a whirl.
I wanted to use neutral grey colors for the furniture upholstery in my “living room” because grey goes with everything. If in the future I want to change the color scheme in the camper, all I need to do is change up the throw pillows or curtains or add some accent colors to the walls. So I chose the charcoal fabric paint.
It took three coats to get it to the right color, which meant three bottles of Simply Spray. I found bottles at Hobby Lobby and Jo-Ann Fabrics. So for less than $40 I have a brand new look. I would definitely use this product again on any light colored fabric needing a little oomph. In fact, this has given me some new ideas for making over some future finds from craigslist and the Goodwill. This is a super easy project for anyone that wants to update upholstery.
While easy, it can be a bit messy. I completely removed the chair from the motorhome before I painted it. I recommend putting down a plastic throw and wearing gloves.
You’ll need to rub the paint in when it sprays out too thick, and it took some maneuvering to get the paint into all the cracks between cushions. I let the chair dry overnight between each coat, which worked well. Three coats seemed to do the trick, but it might take more or less depending on the fabric. The chair does not feel stiff with the paint, and it has not rubbed off on anything.
